seeking less screen time? do these things instead.

It seems a lot of us are looking to rely less on our screens in 2025. Whether that coincides with things going on in society or the simple acknowledgement that life is getting weirder the more we remain glued to our phones (or maybe it’s a combination of it all), I think we could all benefit from the offline things we could be doing instead.

Thus, this post. Ironically, you’d need to read this on a screen. But promise you’ll step away and try something from the list afterward. I will be, too!

Reading - if it’s been a while since you read for fun, try picking up something familiar or nostalgic. then experiment with genres that interest you (like your favorite movie genre!).
Journaling - journaling is so customizable! you can junk journal, write diary entires, plan for the day, scrapbook, answer prompts, write letters, track habits, doodle, anything!
Painting - there are workbooks you can get that provide all the materials you need at a low cost and effort. almost like adult coloring books, which you can also get into.
Playing a sport - some simple sports include badminton, table tennis, pickleball, or volleyball. if you want to amp things up, see if your local area has a sports team!
Thrifting - once you get into this, you’ll be hooked. the fun is in the hunt! and you’d be surprised at what magical things you can find hidden amongst the piles.
Fostering an animal - this is a great opportunity to help your community in a low-maintenance but fun and interactive way. dog walking is an even more relaxed option.
Trying new recipes - whether you’re cooking a meal or baking a new sweet treat, this is always high reward because your efforts will result in something yummy!
Gaming - it’s so exciting to see games for all levels and platforms out there! try cozy gaming if you’re looking for something completely stress-free.
Going for walks or runs - body movement is one of the best things you can do for yourself. walking and running may be the simplest options, since you don’t need any tools!
Yoga or meditation - if you’re looking for a low impact form of body movement, these are your best options. i love that it can be done from anywhere.
Exploring your local community - supporting our local creators is so vital. take a stroll and see what the people in your neighborhood are also working on.
Jewelry making - another high reward activity because you get lots of beautiful pieces out of this!
Taking an art or ceramics class - there are a surprisingly good amount of classes available in local areas, like museums or schools. you can also opt for a virtual class.
Knitting, crocheting, etc. - another one for high reward! this one is great if you’re a multi-tasker and like to listen to audiobooks while doing something else.
Hosting (or attending) themed events - i personally love a themed dinner or game night. take turns with your family or friend group, or even with mutual work/school groups!
Gardening - this doesn’t need to wait for warmer weather, you can start planning now or get into indoor gardening, which is 100% effective.
Volunteering - there are options that are as low-maintenance as putting books on shelves for your local library.
Taking an online course - if you like to keep your brain challenged, try an online course in a topic you’ve always been interested in.
Go cafe hopping - one cafe for a coffee, one cafe for a treat, one cafe for another treat to enjoy later - why not!
