“deinfluencing” has always been a part of slow living

This buzzword has been buzzing all over social media and ngl it had me intrigued from the moment it was presented on my fyp. "Deinfluencing". What does it mean? Should you care?

You should! Deinfluencing is a huge part of slow living and always has been.

What is "Deinfluencing"?

Deinfluencing is the movement urging people to stop buying so many, and often useless, products. Things get a little dicey when it starts to attack influencers (part of why the trend is quickly going off the rails)... but in the simplest terms, it's anti-overconsumption.

Deinfluencing Urges you to be Mindful

Stopping yourself from hitting that "checkout" button is the first step in practicing mindfulness. It strengthens as you begin to ask yourself mindful questions like: How often will I actually use this item in a year? Who am I giving my money to? Do they treat their employees well? Is the quality of this item good enough to last a long time?

Deinfluencing Encourages Minimalism

Less overconsumption = less possessions. That's not a bad thing! You don't need to brand yourself as a minimalist to practice minimalism and you don't need to feel pressured to practice minimalism 100% of the time. Small practices, especially with acquiring items, can make a positive impact on your life. It can help you discover personal values, simplify daily living, and curate all areas in your life, from your wardrobe to your kitchen counter space.

Deinfluencing is Rooted in Sustainability

When we look at this buzzy word's definition,anti-overconsumption, it's clear that the roots come from sustainability. Being eco-conscious means you choose not to ignite the production of countless single-use items. You find low-waste, creative alternatives.

While deinfluencing may seem shiny and new, its origin comes from less consuming and more mindful living. It's a critical step in slow living and one I certainly had to take early on in my own journey.

I hope this is helpful for your journey. Continue to support influencers while also being mindful of your own curated conscious life. Best of luck!
